The National Open University of Nigeria, Regional Training and Research Institute for Distance and Open Learning (NOUN-RETRIDOL), is pondering on extending its capacity enhancement workshops to the University of Lagos’ Distance Learning Institute (DLI) and Igbinedion University’s Distance Learning Centre.

In a press release, dated 25th June, 2021 and signed by the Director, RETRIDOL, Prof. Patrick E. Eya, it said such workshops are hoped to be organised before the end of the current academic year.

The statement titled: “RETRIDOL held Capacity Building Workshops in Nigeria and Ghana,’’ disclosed that NOUN-RETRIDOL had held capacity building workshops in universities in Nigeria and Republic of Ghana in the months of May, and June 2021.

The universities are: Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), Enugu; where over 30 academic staff were trained on the rudiments of Open and Distance Learning (ODL) course material development, with the likes of Prof. Ibrahim Salawu and Prof. Clifford Amini as the facilitators.

In Babcock University, Ilisan Remo, Ogun State, staff were assisted to fine–tune their course materials in preparation for the National Universities Commission final visit and licensing of Babcock as dual-mode university, the statement revealed.

According to Eya, in Ghana, staff in five universities and Ministries, Department and Agencies (MDAs) were also trained in preparation for their transition to dual mode universities, adding that all the interventions were sponsored by the Commonwealth of Learning (COL).

He said the trio of Prof. Eya, Prof. Amini and Dr. Humphrey Danso anchored the workshops.

The Ghanaian universities, he stated, are: Koforidua Technical University, Ghana; Communication Technology University, Ghana; Institute of Journalism (GIJ); Akenten Appiah-Menka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development (AAMUSTED) and the University of Cape Coast (UCC).

While the MDAs include the National Teaching Council (NTC), Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), as well as the Ministry of Education, Ghana.

It could be recalled that RETRIDOL is an ODL Regional Centre for the West African Sub-Region, sponsored by COL and NOUN.
