Enugu visit

The Vice-Chancellor of National Open University (NOUN), Prof. Olufemi Peters, has visited Enugu Study Centre, Enugu State, where he assured that the management was working hard to improve the infrastructures of study centres.

However, before the Vice-Chancellor arrived at the centre, his first point of visit was the residence of the former DVC (Academic) and now director of RETRIDOL, Prof. Patrick Eke Eya, at Emene, Enugu State.

At the residence of the former DVC, the VC thanked his host for warm reception accorded to him and his entourage of principal officers and prayed to God to continue to keep their union together in good health and uphold their children for joy unspeakable.

Similarly, Prof. Eya expressed his profound gratitude for the honour given to him by this memorable visit and prayed for their journey mercies.

He was later at the Enugu Study Centre, where the centre director, Prof. Alexander Uche Onyia and his staff warmly welcomed the team and took them round to the different sections, such as the e-Exam hall, South-east Incubation Centre, Science Laboratory hall, Physical & e-library, among others to inspect and assess the facilities at the centre.

Onyia, in his brief remarks, congratulated Prof. Peters for his appointment as the fifth Vice-Chancellor of the university and described his emergence as an appointment well-deserved.

He also said that the choice of his visit to Enugu was well-thought out, as the visit will certainly arm and equip him for the greater task ahead and to be “the change agent” to truly reposition the university for greater heights.

The director also prayed that the Almighty God in His Infinite love and mercy will continue to endow the authorities of NOUN with divine wisdom for them to continue to steer the ship of the institution in a manner that will make the attainment of its mission and vision possible.

He seized the opportunity to reel out some challenges of the centre, which included, among others, the damaged e-hall, additional building for offices & science laboratories at the rear end, face-lifting of auditorium with central air conditioner, flooring and improvement in ventilation.

The Vice-Chancellor, in his remarks, expressed happiness of visiting Enugu and thanked the university for providing a place called NOUN where people can earn their living and to serve humanity.

While acknowledging the wonderful reception given to them, he also said that the management holds Enugu at high esteem and admitted that his visit has given him an eye opener to certain things.

He appealed to staff on the need to change their attitudes to students and stated that “our greatest investment are the students we have and when they are carefully and well attended to, the possibilities of them bringing their friends to enroll abound.”

He emphasized that the institution needs students’ influx and hence the need for staff to double their efforts as well as work together for the transformation of NOUN into an enviable institution for other universities to learn.

While expressing the management’s commitment of improving the staff welfare, he emphatically cautioned staff on dangers of clamouring for unionism as it is detrimental to the growth and progress as an ODL institution.

Responding to the centre director’s challenges, the VC said that the university management is committed to putting face-lifts to the entire study centres, adding that having gone to centres, Enugu remains the number one choice of becoming a regional study centre.

The principal officers who accompanied the VC included the DVC (Academic), Prof. Uduma Oji Uduma, the Registrar, Mr. Felix Edoka and the Bursar, Dr. Ernest Odeigah.

Other members of the team were the Chairman Senate Business Committee, Prof. Chinedu F. Mafiana, the director, Transport & Logistics and Acting Security director, Malam Isah Shehu.

The director of RETRIDOL, Prof. Patrick Eya, Coordinator, South-east Incubation Centre, Dr. Kalu Nkata Uka, Awgu Community Study Centre Ag. director, Dr. Nwachukwu  Oforbuike were also present at the visit.
