The Director-General, National Mathematical Centre (NMC), Prof. Stephen Onah, has expressed the centre’s interest in collaborating with the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) in areas of topmost priority and beneficial to the centre.
The DG disclosed this when he led a 6-man delegation on a courtesy visit to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Olufemi Peters in his office, at the university headquarters in Abuja.
According to Onah, the main purpose of the visit was to congratulate the Vice-Chancellor on his emergence as the NOUN VC and to also intimate him on some of the ties that have being in existence, with a view to concretizing them for optimal benefits.
He cited areas such as the adjunct relationship; online collaboration and research have been in existence between the university and the centre.
Speaking further about the need of online collaboration, the DG stated that NOUN has an unparalleled widespread in every nook and cranny of the country, and that the centre is looking at how the university will be of assistance in conducting exam and students respond.
He explained that the centre deals with national and International Olympia examinations where all secondary school students participate.
“I would like to appeal if there can be a working relationship, whereby NOUN, through the senate or its organs, will be able to collaborate, that our staff can be involved in some of the academic programmes in whatever form the university may choose, so that at the point of assessment, the university will be able to submit the assessment and gives the title while we utilize the title given to them by the university,’’ he said.
On the aspect of research, the DG also stated that “We want to advance the collaboration with NOUN much more than others due to its proximity and operational scope, which is wider than any other single university in Nigeria.
The NOUN Vice-Chancellor, in his response, welcomed the delegation and commended them for coming to felicitate with him.
Peters, who took time off to respond to the appeals by the centre, said the collaboration on the three areas are very doable, urging for a serious commitment for such to succeed.
The VC, while responding on the issue of adjunct relationship, stated that “all the things you said are sweet to our ears. I share in your aspirations, I will present to the management, senate and council and see how it will be done; this has to be done on the level of council, they are the ones that promote.
