Unilag seeks partnership with Surulere centre

The newly-established Surulere Study Centre of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), has played host to the Dean and Heads of Unit in the Faculty of Engineering, University of Lagos (Unilag).

The team, headed by the dean of the faculty, Prof. O.M. Sadiq, expressed appreciation towards the gesture demonstrated in accepting the invitation by the director of the centre, Prof. Yemisi Ogunlela,and her management staff.

Sadiq said the purpose of the visit was to congratulate the director being the head of the Surulere centre facilitated by one of their alumni in the Faculty of Law, the Chief of Staff to the President, Rt. Hon.Femi Gbajabiamila and also to seek a possible partnership with the study centre.

The dean said his faculty is ready to be in support and offer assistance in the area of practical exercises carried out by the university.

He mentioned ten programmes of his faculty such as Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, and Computer Engineering, among others.

In her response, the director appreciated their visit and intimated them about the history of NOUN, the mode of operation, the number of study centres, courses offered and the mission and vision of the university.

Ogunlela emphasised on e-learning process which the students of the university can access through online videos and facilitations.

"We reach our students through facilitation, we give a timetable for each course to log-in at the scheduled time and receive the programme,”she said.

On the flexible nature of NOUN, the director said If a student misses an examination in the first semester, he can also attempt the exam in the second semester."

She said NOUN has collaborations with universities as the institution engages the services of many professors outside it for the purposes of facilitation, course material development, questions settings, vetting exam questions, marking and project moderation.

The director also discussed the aspect of entrepreneurship studies, saying that NOUN has incubation centres across the geo-political zones of Nigeria and were established for students to display their talents and creativity. 

Ogunlela later toured the visitors round staff offices, facilitation rooms, moot court rooms, laboratories, among others.

At the end of the visit, souvenirs and gifts were presented to the guests.
