The Vice-Chancellor, National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Prof. Olufemi Peters, has said the institution will take up the challenge to develop a proposal for the Africa Centre of Excellence on Technology Enhanced Learning (ACETEL) leveraging technology to reach all parts of Africa.

Peters said this while declaring open a week-long 3rd ACETEL Virtual Postgraduate Students Orientation ceremony, which kicked off on Monday, February 16, 2022 at the headquarters of the university, Jabi, Abuja.

The VC, represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Technology, Innovation and Research (DVC-TIR) Prof. Monioluwa Olaniyi, stated that ACETEL is poised in e-learning and content delivery and can well cover the continent.

‘‘We are aware that technology is fast shaping our world and there is need to innovatively apply scientific knowledge to achieve teaching and learning, which has resulted in various technological interventions,’’ he said.

Peters then congratulated the students for making the list as the third set admitted into the ACETEL programme.

Earlier in her welcome address, ACETEL director, Prof. Grace Jokthan, said over 94 students have been admitted into various programmes in the centre.

She added that the centre’s partnership with CISCO and Coursera is aimed at enhancing the learning process of students through short and professional courses.

Jokthan, while encouraging students to apply, stated that the centre has scholarship opportunities for both PhD and MSc students.

‘‘Postgraduate students,” she explained, “will have the opportunity to undergo internship training both internationally and nationally.’’

On her part, the research coordinator for ACETEL, Prof. Christine Ofulue, implored the new students to participate in the self-assessment questions and discussion forums that would be organised by their facilitators, as their participation will aid their learning experience.

Ofulue further urged the students to focus on their studies and be good ambassadors of the university.
