The system of Open and Distance Learning (ODL), championed by the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), has transformed my life academically, socially and religiously, winner of the 2023 Edition of the Vice-Chancellor's Annual Essay Writing Competition, Mr. Lawal Atanda Sharafadeen, has said.

He stated this during a live interview programme on NOUN 105.9  radio station in Lagos.

When asked about the writing competition, Sharafadeen narrated that his write-up titled ODL at NOUN, was based on sharing insights and experiences of students' engagements with various segments.

"I have the experience on both positive and negative notes. I love reading, writing and chatting; the university has transformed me academically from my first degree," he said.

The competition’s winner explained that what inspired him most was the passion for academic excellence and the desire to contribute to knowledge.

"So, (upon) getting the information on the website, I did my research (and) then applied (for) it," he added.

Sharafadeen said he tried to put his best in the writings not only to become a winner but also to share his positive viewpoint on Open and Distance Learning education in NOUN.

He stressed on the support he received from colleagues who specialised in English language in vetting during the process.

Reminiscing on his life changing experience, Sharafadeen delved on some of the challenges he encountered, which made him to discontinue his education at some point.

He, however, appreciated the support of the university during his studies.

Sharafadeen is a B.A (ed) English language graduate from the Lagos Study Centre, after which he proceeded for his postgraduate study at the Lagos Mainland 1 Study Centre and graduated with a Master of Arts in Islamic Studies.
