The Department of Chemistry of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) has held a familiarisation exercise in preparation for the launch of the latest laboratory equipment, known as Atomic Absorption Spectrometer, 280 FS device.
The equipment is an easy, high-throughput technology used primarily to analyse elements in solution and it is mainly used in food and beverage, water, clinical research, and pharmaceutical analysis.
The familiarisation exercise, conducted on Wednesday, 19 January 2022 at the department’s laboratory, University Village, Jabi, Abuja, was spearheaded by the popular lab equipment makers, Agilent.
The consultant, Mr. Abdulrasheed Isiaku, gave a practical demonstration on how to use the 280 FS spectrometer, where he disassembled and reassembled the device and showed staff how to do the same.
Isiaku, who assured that the installation process was almost 100 percent foolproof, explained that the latest spectrometer came with an extractor and a power generating device, and also took them through the necessary safety measures in the case of a laboratory mishap.
The Head of Department, Dr. Henrietta Kelle alongside her staff inspected the spectrometer and reveled at the prospect of the university becoming a sought-after centre for scientific research in Nigeria.
