Nursing students at the Awka Study Centre of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) have faced preceptors in the 2024 Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) at Awka, Anambra State.

The OSCE headed by the Director/Head of Nursing Services, Mrs. Augustina Ezeanoro of the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu Teaching Hospital(COOTH), Anambra State, charged students to give the exercise serious attention, adding that in the nursing profession students are expected to demonstrate their practical skills and competencies.

Also speaking, Agbo Darlingson Anibe of the NOUN’s Department of Nursing, and an external examiner, said that OSCE is a standardised step-by-step test format which comprises of different clinical stations that replicate real-life situations where the test takes place and students are evaluated.

Anibe, while describing the OSCE as a model that is practised all over the world, also stated that the Board of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria has approved its adoption for the general nursing programme.

He added that the aim was to use a simulated clinical environment to test how well students deal with situations and respond to questions that may arise.

According to Anibe, it assesses the theoretical and practical skills, leadership, and situational awareness of students, among others.

He reiterated that OSCE is where students are tested using a few patients who were available during the examination period and the preceptors on the spot evaluate students' clinical skills using check-lists in a reliable, objective, consistent and standardised way.

The exercise was for students of 300 level: NSC 318; 400 level for NSC 406 and 500 level for NSC 513.

Other preceptors who were involved include the duo of Principal Nursing Officers, Mrs. Ifeanyichukwu Okeke and Mrs. Angela Nebo.
