The management of Ikom Community Study Centre, Ikom, Cross River State, has spread its advocacy tentacles to the Federal Government College (FGC), Ikom, to persuade the students towards deciding to enroll at the West Africa’s foremost Open and Distance learning (ODL) university, the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) upon graduation.
Director of the centre, Dr. Edwin Bassey, who led the advocacy team on Thursday, 16 September 2021, explained to the college community why NOUN was a worthy alternative to the conventional university system for the youngsters as they graduate from the college.
One of the reasons given was that NOUN offers a flexible mode of instructional delivery, which affords learners the opportunity to juggle their university education with other life interests, as well as carry their studies according to their individual capacity and at their own pace.
Bassey also explained that education was fast migrating from the conventional four walls of confined classrooms to the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), which is the newest innovation as far as educational technologies are concerned.
He said the VLE, which is NOUN’s trademark learning platform, enables learners to study synchronously and asynchronously anytime and anywhere they find themselves by the instrumentality of their smart phones, laptop and desktop computers.
He described NOUN as one of the most Information and Communication Technology (ICT) compliant institutions in Nigeria, and urged the students to take advantage of what the university offers to join the emerging global technology-driven education trend.
Responding, the College Principal, Mrs. T. C. Atoe, who accorded the advocacy team a warm welcome, expressed her appreciation for the visit, which she said has lifted the veil off the programmes and operations of NOUN as an institution of higher learning.
Atoe said the sensitisation was not only important for the students, but also for members of her staff, who can as well take advantage of NOUN’s mode of educational delivery to go for advance degrees without hazarding their jobs.
There was a session of questions and answers after the presentation, as Bassey also presented souvenirs to his host.
