The National Open University of Nigeria Alumni Association (NOUNAA) has held its Annual National Congress where the association discussed progress, achievements, and challenges.
The event, held on September 7, 2024 at the NOUN’s Abuja Model Study Centre, Dutse-Alhaji, drew a multitude of the university’s graduates, university officials, and key stakeholders.
In his address, Principal Assistant Registrar, Mr. Tiamiyu Oladimeji, who represented the Director, Directorate of Advancement and Linkages, expressed the university's pride in the association’s efforts.
He commended the association for its numerous contributions, which have strengthened NOUN's reputation in Open and Distance Learning education. "This is a testament to the association's performance.
“I encourage you all to continue in the same spirit, as your contributions have set an example for the education sector."
NOUNAA President, Ambassador Ifeanyi Obukwelu, on his part, provided an overview of the association's accomplishments and challenges since taking office 10 months ago.
Obukwelu acknowledged the previous leadership for its foundational work and highlighted key achievements during his tenure.
One of the major accomplishments was the creation of the NOUNAA Award Prize for the Best Graduating Student, fully sponsored by the association for five years and presented annually at the university's convocation.
According to him, the initiative was aimed at rewarding academic excellence and inspiring future students.
He further expressed optimism about expanding support for academic achievements with additional award categories in the future.
Obukwelu also revealed several new projects to enhance alumni engagement, saying that one of such initiatives is the securing of a locked-up shop at NOUN headquarters to serve as a resource centre for the alumni, offering information, branded materials, and alumni publications such as the NOUN Alumni Bulletin.
Additionally, he announced the commencement of construction on the NOUN Alumni Village, which will feature a 40-room Guesthouse and a Water Factory, with all approvals secured.
A 3D presentation of the Alumni Village’s architectural design was showcased during the event, illustrating the structures to be built on the project land.
The Financial Secretary, NOUNAA, Comrade Chiadika Onyiye, presented a detailed report of revenues and expenses for the past eight months, reinforcing the financial transparency of the association.
The Director, Abuja Model Study Centre, Dutse Alhaji, Prof. Nebath Tanglang, in a goodwill message, expressed his joy at hosting the congress and reaffirmed the centre’s commitment to providing adequate infrastructure for a conducive learning environment.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks from the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Muntaka Abdul-Hadi, who appreciated the attendees and praised the leadership team for its contributions to the association's growth.
