The Vice-President, South-south Chapter of the National Open University of Nigeria Alumni Association (NOUNAA), Mr. Donald Isaac Udoh, on Thursday, July 25, 2024 led a delegation of members of his association on a work visit to Port Harcourt Study Centre of the university.
Udoh, who was accompanied by his predecessor, Sir T. I. Nzerem, said that his team was on a presidential tour of the centre on behalf of NOUNAA's National President, Mr. Ifeanyi Kingsley Obukwelu, to gather first-hand information on challenges faced by the centre and how his association may assist to resolve them.
Udoh, who disclosed that his tour would take him through all the 16 study centres in the South-south region for the same purpose, promised to give a comprehensive report on his findings to the national executive body for further action.
The Centre Director, Dr. Theresa Ucheoma Ettu, who accorded the visitors a warm welcome, said that the major challenges of the centre were security bridges and inadequate power supply.
Ettu therefore highlighted areas in which the alumni association can assist her centre to include installation of solar panels, close-circuit television cameras and a sit-out pavilion for students.
She explained that the high cost of premium motor spirit (PMS) and diesel has placed necessity on the centre to install solar panels as an alternative power source.
Ettu further stated that the incidents of burglary and theft at the centre were as embarrassing as they were alarming hence her desire to install CCTV cameras to stem the tide of the menace.
She also explained that the construction of a sit-out pavilion would take students off the streets (as they normally crowd over the street) and give them a place to hang around during events like convocation, matriculation and examinations.
