The Maiduguri Study Centre of National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), has taken its advocacy campaign of Open and Distance Learning (ODL) mode of education to the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) and Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Borno State commands.
While at the police command, Maiduguri, the centre director, Mr. Idris Garba, who led a team of staff, intimated the Borno State Commissioner of Police, CP Abdu Umar, of the purpose of their visit and explained the activities of NOUN to the CP and his team.
Garba, who explained the benefits of enrolling into NOUN, its vision, credibility and the advantages it has over conventional institutions, reaffirmed the mandate of the institution in taking education to the door-step of every organisation.
The director said the Nigerian Police officers cannot be ignored by NOUN because of the crucial role they play in fighting crimes in Nigeria, adding that with good and sound education, the officers’ performance will be enhanced.
He cited Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution, Criminology and Security Studies, Law, and some other relevant courses, emphasising the flexibility nature of the system, which caters the needs of the paramilitary officers even when transferred out of the current location.
The director said officers who are afraid to allow their wives or children to be away from them for study because of the insecurity in the country, disclosed that NOUN is a better place for them as he reiterated the flexibility and affordability nature of the system being an ODL institution driven by technology-mediated learning processes.
He added that the university is a federal government-approved institution and is at per with any other university in the country, adding that all its programmes have been fully and duly accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC) and operates its programmes in full time basis.
The director and his team, later, held an interactive session with the DPOs and Mobile Commanders in the state during their monthly strategic meeting in the Command headquarters, Maiduguri, where they explained the criteria for securing admission into the institution, courses, admission processes, mode of payment, registration, mode of instructional delivery and on-line facilitation, among others
The director called on the officers and men of the command to take advantage of the institution to further their education in good time as the university operates without embarking on strike.
In his response, the Commissioner of Police, CP Abdu Umar, who welcomed the team, expressed his appreciation for the sensitisation and awareness about NOUN and promised to advocate for the university to attract more enrollment to the centre.
Umar commended the centre director, Mr. Idris Garba and his team for doing a great job by bringing education to the door-step of Nigerians and especially to him and his officers and men of the Nigerian police.
He reiterated the advantages of NOUN in terms of flexibility, saying that they don't have to leave their various locations to come to the class since the mode of operation of the institution affords them the opportunity to study from where they are at their own pace and time.
The commissioner thanked the team and the university for this great opportunity.
The advocacy drive also took the team to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Borno State Command and the team was received by the Corps Commandant, Utten I. Boyi and his team.
The director also extended similar messages to the men and officers of the command and urged them to take advantage of the various programmes offered by NOUN to upgrade themselves since learning is a life-long exercise.
The commandant equally appreciated the director for the visit and urged his Corps Road Marshalls to take advantage of NOUN to enroll and further their education.
Both visits ended with brief lectures to the men and officers of the commands.
